for example EDF 2015 compared to 2014, the standing charge has increased from 14p a day to 20p a day, so the increase is not on your gas its on standing charge so if you dont use any gas /lecy you still pay higher charge

How many people don't use any gas or electricity? From what I recall, even Swampy came out of his cubby hole.

What matters is the overall cost. What you pay per year.

If I use quite a lot of energy because I'm a family with 5 kids and the tumble drier and shower running all the time, I don't really care if the standing charge goes up by 6p a day (£21.90 a year), as long as the unit charge for energy doesn't rise.

That's why you have to check with a couple of the comparison sites and do your own sums. If you know what you use in kw then you can get a more accurate quote otherwise if you are estimating (guessing) your consumption you should try several different scenarios to see how the standing charge/tariff rate affects you A larger standing charge and lower unit prices work better for higher users whereas a low SC and higher unit prices favour the lower user. I

Standing charges vary from £0 or £36 per year to more than £200 per year. On a variable tariff suppliers can change this whenever they like and as much as they like. But like any price change they have to inform you and you are able to reject the price change if you find an alternative supplier and switch to them in a timely fashion. You then maintain the original price until the switch.
