post boxes are usually for letters and envelopes. But would it still be accepted for heavy items such as books or dvds or anything heavy that can fit through the slot?

According to Royal Mail a letter is classed up to 1kg. Anything after 1Kg is classed as a parcel.
There's also a bit more info on dimensions of parcels.
But as long as it fits into the box, you've paid the right amount in stamps & packaged it well, I can't really see there being a problem.:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:0 -
...got me wondering exactly what it is u wanna put in the postbox? (nosey eh!)0

Be careful about sending items without a certificate of posting. If the item gets lost it is easy to claim back of the PO with a COP, not so easy if you've just put it in the post box.
