can anyone advise what would be cheapest, and easiest to implement for a non techie, option to enable me to keep my lap top running (perfectly servicable at the moment) after demise of xp in april 2014. are there cheap programmes available which can automatically convert existing system and where can i purchase these, with appropriate costs. any guidance would be appreciated including any info on this discussion ,and how to actually change operating systems ,if it has already been debated. thanks in advance for any help.

Linux, in the form of Ubuntu/Mint/openSUSE etc are all free. Otherwise you can max out the RAM and install Windows 7 or 8.0

XP will not stop working in 2014 - all it means is that Microsnot will not issue updates for it.
If you keep your antivirus upto date and just change to an alternative browser, Firefox/chrome etc.
Whatever operating system is used - be careful with what you do on the net, you should be OK.
I still have a machine with Windows 98 and that still works fine on and off the net, and there has been no updates for years !.0 -
XP will continue to work, even though MS 'remove support' for it, so that's your cheapest option.0

I tried Linux mint as a test in preparation for the demise in the XP support. 2 months later and I'm more than happy running Linux Mint 13. Its got the majority of what I want from a PC, and all for free. I've found it also to be a hell of a lot quicker than windows XP or Windows 7My £2 savings total for 2007 = £92, for 2008 = £124
My savings from money off coupons for 2007 = £67.97, for 2008 = £194.79
My £2 savings for 2009 (so far) = £130
My savings from money off coupons for 2009 = £593.08
