  • Genuinely not having a go at you but just want to give you something to think about...

My uncle and his new wife decided to get married without telling anybody, we are not a particularly close family but this still hurt us all. It wasn't the fact that he didn't want us there, but the fact that he didn't tell us. Just a text on the morning to say 'we're in love, we're happy and we've decided to get married! We don't want any fuss so we're doing on our own today' would have been nice...that way we could have sent our good wishes to them. Now it's almost like he couldn't be bothered telling us he was getting married so why should we bother with him.....
Like I said, genuinely not having a go at your choice, but letting you know how it feels from 'the other side' xx

I take the view that it is the bride and groom's day and they can have it any way they please. My brother got married in Turkey ... they did have another ceremony over here later which I went to but I honestly wasn't the least bit offended he told us after the Turkey ceremony and not before.

Especially if the family isn't a close one I honestly don't see what there is to be hurt about .... I regarded us as close and was just happy for them.... if it was just a cousin or an aunt ....my reaction would be "Oh that's nice" In fact thinking about it my cousin DID get married on the quiet just before I did less than 15 miles away from my home .... I still invited her to my wedding .... (her Mum in Dublin admittedly was less than thrilled though). Not everyone wants a huge fuss ...or the expense.

Nope, just checked and you're still there.....

Anyway, back to the OT.....I'm very definitely of the opinion that it should be up to the bride and groom, whether they want a big shindig or a quiet "just the two of them" affair. I've got friends who ended up having bigger weddings because it was what was expected, and didn't enjoy them, and I have friends who booked the afternoon off work one Wednesday, went to work in the morning, got married just the two of them and a couple of randomers as witnesses in the afternoon, and who have just celebrated their silver wedding having been very happy for the last 25 years and wouldn't have changed a thing.

I know that you can't please all of the people all of the time, but if running away to get wed is what you want to do, then do it, enjoy it, and if you are happy in your marriage, your friends, family, colleagues etc will be happy for you.
