Thanks for the advice Chevalier...it's always useful to hear from people who are there! My hubby's job is on the second skills list, so also still in demand. We won't be shipping any furniture (it would cost us more than the furniture's worth!)

We also have a few friends over there who are keeping us posted regarding jobs/accommodation etc, cost of emigrating etc. :)

I know I'm rather fusing MSE with Poms in Oz Forums (which I'm sure you are aware of) but I live in Australia and would support Chevalier's view that Australia is, in all but in an official sense, in a recession for most industries (mining boosted economy prevents official recession)

The skills list is also in no way a reflection of jobs that are available, ie occupation on the list doesn't mean a job is waiting and it is EXTREMELY expensive here when you first arrive with pounds.

Good on you for not joining the club of those who think secure the visa, declare bankrupt and leave for Australia :D
  • Thanks! I've made a start on Gargraves...so nice to read about someone with similar debts and similar dreams who made it out of the other side!:j

Thanks for the link to Frugal Queen's blog too...will start looking through that later.

Clive e: Thanks for the heads up...we've opened an account over there - still have to speak with them to finalise things/check charges etc, but the plan will be to save money in advance for us to live on when we first arrive. We're also in the fortunate position to have friends out there who are desperate to help in any way we can. That said, any advice/knowledge is always welcome and SO useful, so feel free to pass more on if you think of anything!:)

:TToday: NSD and renewed home/contents insurance with a new company. Savings: £7.38 per month - £88.56 per year.:T

    Not millions...but it's a start! x

Well the exchange rate is slowly moving in your favour, so that sounds like a really good idea. Banks charge less fees per month to have an account than they used to, I've not paid any for my Commonwealth account in years but I have to pay in $2000 a month for there to be no fees. Certainly some accounts are now free :)
