converting a house into 2 flats

Has anyone thought of buying a property with another couple and converting it into 2 flats.
Would it be financially viable to do this as good sound proofing would be a must in my estimation.
Would planning be allowed?
Just thinking out loud as to the viability of this as a solution to the housing dilemma
You could pick better areas to live if allowed

Planning would be the main problem.0

If it's a suitable sized run down property in an area where there are plenty of flat conversions it may be viable. However purchase price plus conversion costs may make the purchase of 2 small houses a better bet.
It's a situation where you have to do a lot of homework and be prepared for disagreement and inconvenience. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
I take it that's a no then.
Oh well back to the drawing board.0
