I've been sent a new router......

I'm with Talk Talk. Well, somebody has to be, I suppose.
I have all the basics required of a well connected modern home - a 'phone line, a router, a computer (a laptop) and a printer. The laptop goes nowhere. It's sits on a table permanently hooked up with cables and a USB mouse.
I potter along the t'internet, going only onto trusted sites, no games, no big graphics or other memory hungry programs.
Out of the blue, Talk Talk sent me a new router in a big, shiny, black box.
I haven't even opened the box. I don't need wireless connection, the pooter is fast enough for most of my needs and, as far as I'm concerned, I've got a nice backup should the old router fail. It's worked alright for the last five years, but it may fail and now I've got a back up, right?
Talk Talk however, seem very keen to get me to use the new one and have sent letters and emails reminding, urging and outright ordering me to use the new router.
They even have a recycling system for the old one, if that's my concern.
No it isn't.
Why are Talk Talk so keen to get me to use the new router?
Would it affect the service if I carry on using the old one until it breaks?
Has anyone else had this?
What does the new router do that the old one doesn't?

It's unlikely but possible that your old router doesn't support ADSL2+ so you could maybe get a speed increase. Why don't you call TT CS and ask them why they want you to disrupt your current setup?0 -
They're issuing them to give you a faster connection and it does work. When I got mine it increased it considerably. If you don't want a better connection then continuing to use your old one won't do any harm. Using the new one won't cost you anything and it doesn't tie you into a new contract.
Personally, I don't know why you don't just connect it up and get a better service. It's simple enough to do. Why look a gift horse in the mouth?0 -
If you call them, make sure to ask if accepting the new router will affect your contract in any way.
It's possible that they may try to tie you in for a fixed period using the acceptance of the router as an excuse.0 -
I replaced a Belkin and a Netgear with Talktalks cheapo router and it's behaved almost faultlessly,much better than either of the others0

No need to call them. See Post above: No cost, no new contract.0 -
like everything, technology changes, so they will send out new faster routers to their customers, its just a matter of placing the ethernet and ASDL cable into the new router and it should not disturb your service.0

Why not try it and see? You can always revert.
If your old TT router is non-wireless, it's at least 5 years old-possibly an old Speedtouch USB modem, rather than a router? Make and model?No free lunch, and no free laptop

Cheapo router? they're Huawei. It might sound like it was knocked up in a China man's garage but Huawei are huge.
I had one delivered the other day and getting the emails, but I've not got round to setting it up yet.0 -
Sending out new routers makes it much easier for TalkTalk to then flog customers their TV package. Those customers will then already have most of the tech needed.
