I don't even know which account I want to switch to though. Is First Direct really the best one? What about Santander???

There seems to be a list of account requirements missing from your post, ie branch access, decent in-credit interest rates, low overdraft fees, high value FPs, etc, etc.
Perhaps you should list them in order to ensure that any suggestions made are useful?0 -
First Direct is rarely the best, unless you don't like to use internet banking.
If you do use internet banking, then pick from Santander, Halifax or Nationwide.0
