Kitchen lighting - options & cost

Hi all
We're looking over options for our kitchen redesign and trying to see where we can save a few quid as the budget is tight.
Our current ceiling is artex and we plan to have it replastered / over boarded regardless.
Our working assumption has always been to have spots fitted - probably about 16 in a l-shaped open kitchen diner.
I'm now wondering if it would save significant cash if we had just light fittings installed? We'd need 3, one for kitchen, one for diner and one for a patio / lounge area.
Welcome thoughts on both cost of spots vs fittings and installation costs. We expect to get the kitchen rewired as part of the job.
Many thanks in advance
Steve

I should add, it's a flat roof extension if that makes a difference??0

Buying and fitting 3 pendants will be cheaper than buying and fitting 16 spots.
If you chose to you could then use a fitting light this to give you spot lights:

Not answering the question as such... but I would say, when I had my kitchen redone the spotlights made a massive difference to the feel of the room. £350 and worth every penny! Just saying...0

Thanks all. Roughly what saving would there be on wiring / fitting? East midlands.
I like the look of this one http://m.wickes.co.uk/Bullet-6-Bar-Spotlight/p/1870330
