Could someone advise me about how to do this please.

Hubby wants to make a one off payment to someone else's credit card but we're a bit confused when we get to the page where we set up a new bill payment.

We searched to find the credit card companies details so we could put in a sort code and account number, but what we ended up with is for the whole 'company' rather than an individual's account number. How to we actually direct it so the payment is applied to the person's credit card account?

Do we put their credit card number in the 'reference' box?

Usually the 16-dig card number has to be used as a reference.
That said, instead of searching the internet it's really worth checking the actual bill that clearly explains how to make a payment.

Do you actually know that is what you have to do with Santander online payments system or are you generalising? I don't want a lot of money disappearing into the ether once I hit the submit button.

We have no bill as it is not one of our credit cards. It belongs to someone else and we're paying it off for them. We have never done a one off payment for a credit card so do not know the specifics of how the Santander process works.

If I could find the answer to my question on the Santander site I wouldn't be here getting confirmation (or otherwise) of how I think the process is supposed to work.
  • You need the sort-code, account number for the money to go into the right bank account. A large CC, offering a portfolio of different cards, might have more than one account to receive payments. Therefore it is important you check the statement.

Then you need the 16-digit card number as reference (to ensure the payment is credited to the correct card).

Santanders online bill payments system works the same as every other bank transfer: you enter (or look up) a sort code and account number, enter an amount and a reference, and they send the money accordingly.

The exact details of what you need to put in to ensure the money is credited to the correct place depends not on which service you're using to send the money, but what the credit card provider expects -- hence the advice to check the statement for the definitive answer!

You'll need to have registered your mobile phone number with Santander before you start - part of the process is an authentication code sent to that.

There are other ways but not online (phone, branch)

For my Santander CC it was 09-00-99 01000007 and the reference as above, but this doesn't mean that it's necessarily the same for your card.
  • Excellent, thank you so much guys! I understand now. I've spoken to the friend and they've fished out an old statement, and it has on there the sort-code, account number and does say 'your card number is your payment reference'.

Last night I was sure the reference number would be the credit card number until hubby said that he normally writes what the payment is for like 'car insurance payment'. When I asked him what he would write he said "well, credit card payment for [person's name]." You know when you're sure but the other person is just as sure, and you just end up thinking maybe you're wrong not them?

Thank goodness I insisted stopping the transaction and asking the question on here. I think hubby might be used to sending payments to people and not organisations. :D
