So there is a Merc. M class, 5ltr V8, automatic with lpg conversation. So what would be the cost per mile compared to my present 50mpg diesel auto?

Assuming the V8 does about 10mpg on LPG and the LPG costs 70p per litre, it would cost circa 32p per mile in LPG. You would also have to put some petrol in the car to start it.2018 totals:
Savings £11,200
Mortgage Overpayments £5,5000 -
Probably just over half the MPG.
LPG in big cars just makes it less painful rather than economical. The size of the LPG tank also plays a big part in it or you'll be doing more trips to the petrol station. If the car on petrol gives you 18mpg then you'll be under 30mpg on gas, so you'll want a decent sized tank,0 -
for comparison purposes our Outlander does 25mpg on petrol, 23mpg on gas, long journeys and steadier speeds make little difference.
On that V8 Benz i'd be expecting 15mpg petrol, 13 mpg gas, unless you do long runs and prepared to run with the lorries at 55mph, then you might get about 20/18.
Do lots of research, these are not loved cars.
Valid point about tank size, i see a chap with a Jeep Cherokee where i fill up with LPG sometimes, he gets about 100 miles from his too small tank.0 -

strangely enough it was my old Cherokee that I was thinking about. My first had an 80litre tank and the second was 40 / 50litre and I was forever filling up.0 -

I have an 80 litre (so holds about 70) tank in my car, thats fine for 250+ miles before i have to think about filling, the Outlander has a toroidal 55 litre jobbie in the spare wheel well which is only just big enough.
40/50 litre in a Cherokee must have been a PITA...purely out of interest there a S plate Cherokee visits one of my neighbours regularly and its showroom, even the diamond cut and laquered alloys are pristine, don't know quite how he keeps it as well as that but all credit to him.0 -
Thanks all, it was just a thought, I now see why the Merc. is so cheap.
I need to get a car with bigger towing capacity than our current Auris.
It needs to be auto and would like a higher seating position, like our old Scenic but want a slightly smaller more modern look.0 -
Budget? How about a LR Discovery?2018 totals:
