Living Abroad with UK Bank Accounts

I am moving to Italy for a couple of years this summer and will be retaining my UK bank account and credit card. My bank charges 2.75% and my credit card 2.65% when I use my card abroad and there is also a charge for withdrawing cash from an ATM (Min £2.00 Max 4.50). Does anyone know of a better option or a bank account that offers lower rates for foreign purchases?
