Vat receipts are a legal requirement!

No they're not. Not every company trades enough to be VAT registered. The current limit is £81,000. A small time Amazon trader might not be at that level.

Wrong. Even if you do not meet the compulsory threshold, you can still become VAT Registered:

"Voluntary registration You can register voluntarily if your business turnover is below £81,000. You must pay HMRC any VAT you owe from the date they register you."

I believe it is a legal requirement to provide an invoice if the business is VAT registered, although I have come across companies who have said they are VAT registered but they are not.

    No, they were completely correct.

They responded to a comment stating "Vat receipts are a legal requirement", and gave a perfectly valid example of when a VAT receipt is not required - if the company is not VAT registered.

This is irrelevant. Just because a smaller company could become VAT registered if they wished, it doesn't change the fact that they may not be, and so may not have to issue a VAT receipt.

old thread , and read with interest , on the parking forum people have been having problems with a company that makes its services in a manner that is vattable , however they state that they are not vat registered on there website and to the public , they are showing almost £150,000 turnover (or profit , not sure) after contacting the vat people , firstly as an individual , then as a vat registered company , and stating the companys name and reg number , they will not say if the company ids vat reg or not , and there number

if you lot in "the know" can help , please post back
  • We have been trading on Amazon for many years now and are also VAT registered
I have been reading this forum with interest and also because another buyer has recently asked for VAT invoice. The following information I can offer is not a solution but will help others to understand the challenges we face as sellers when it comes to VAT.
Firstly you pay Amazon and then they pay me " less their fees and commission so the amount I get is less than you paid them, my contract is with them not you so really I should not provide a VAT receipt to any buyers on Amazon as they did not buy the goods from me, they brought them from Amazon, ebay is different as you pay me through payal or card, not ebay
Amazon should really supply these VAT invoices themselves but they don't for reasons they don't tell you or me. The inland revenue is either stumped by complicated laws or waiting for government changes to allow them to intervene

As a company who thrives on good feedback we provide a manual VAT invoice to all buyers asking for one as we do not wish to have our feedback affected by issues out of our control, as long as the customer sends us their direct email as Amazon normally deletes my attachments?

Maybe this makes everyone more confused? either way I cannot see this info on the forum so thought I would add it to the mix, so to speak

I'm confused by this - I always thought items sold directly by a seller or even fulfilled by Amazon was you buying something from the seller and Amazons payment system was used to facilitate the transaction.
  • Many fulfilled by amazon sellers are based out of uk and are international sellers they do not have uk vat numbers but they have an american company number , click on the name of company and details of where it is based will come up,
