It would be reasonable to expect it to last longer I know people who still have their launch console.

And I agree they are under no obligation. But surely they can't go and start agreeing to things and then take it back. There has to be some accountability when they have agreed and arranged regardless of how old it is. What if it was one day out of warranty. The courier being arranged. It's just all very frustrating.

What is the deal with an engineers report. What does it need to prove exactly. because how can you tell a fault was inherent. if for example it shows it is no fault of my own. Would I be in a position to claim under the statute of limitations act as I think it is reasonable to expect it to last longer. The console was well looked after. what would be an acceptable offer such as goodwill gesture or partial refund.

The engineers report would need to show an inherent fault, so something like poor workmanship, manufacturing fault, or unreasonable wear and tear. The problem is that after 2 and a half years it would be hard to argue unreasonable wear and tear, and electronic components are very complex.

Assuming for the minute that you did get a report in your favour then I imagine the very best you would get in terms of a refund would be 50% (which would give a life of 5 years to the console). Realistically it would probably be much less than that.

I can understand it being frustrating that they have back tracked, I can't understand why they agreed to a full refund without even seeing the console first.

Just thought I would update. Amazon accepted the return and gave me a full refund.
