Options
Good morning,
I took a delivery of an item three weeks ago from China via FedEx, I have just received a bill from FedEx for £16 for Import fees. Should this be paid by me as I have not entered any contract with FedEx and as far as im aware I have paid postage to the sender of the item?? please advise as im not sure of what to do.

    Hi

These are customs charges (eg import duty and / or VAT) being levied by HMRC, you do have to pay them. It doesn't make any difference whether a parcel is sent by Fedex or by any other system. Customs have the right to inspect parcels coming into the country, and apply the appropriate import charges (duties and VAT). All that has happened is that to help you Fedex have first settled this with HMRC, to get the parcel through customs so it could be delivered to you, and are now asking for the costs from you.

If you import an item, you are liable for any duty etc.

    1. Yes you should.
    2. You purchased the item.
    3. The item was sent, and delivered, this is what was covered by the postage you paid to the sender.
    4. You purchased an item which was declared in excess of acceptable levels for free clearance.
    5. You were sent the bill.
    6. You should pay the bill.

yes you need to pay as other state its the custom charges Fedex have paid. your package was just unlucky to be in a consignment checked by customs. The last customs charges i paid was £220 and that was because my supplier ( i sell toys) filled in the declaration wrong which made customs check my consignment.

So you are in a conspiracy with your supplier to defraud Revenue and Customs? You will be PPR again soon.

Did you do your research as to whether any charges would be payable ?

Ive not done research myself but im aware charges could be charged for ordering an item from overseas.

no as i also place funds to one side to cover these charges as you never know if your consignment will be one that customs check as they cant check every single container that comes into the UK. even paying custom charges the wholesale price is cheaper than what i can get the item from UK wholesalers, which means i can pass the savings onto customers. I always check the goods i receive before i place them for sale and have even sent goods to safety test centers that i was not sure of safety wise.
