Reclaiming APD from EasyJet?

girlneedshelp

We have booked six tickets to Malta which we cannot use on EasyJet. If we cancel our tickets, EasyJet will charge us a cancellation fee of £30 each (which is entirely justified as outlined in their terms and conditions.) The tickets cost less then £30 each, so cancelling the tickets makes little sense.

Now if we do not cancel the tickets and simply don't show up, will we still be charged the £30 cancellation free? I would like to reclaim the APD taxes on the flights which amounts to £13 each or £78 for our party. If we don't show up and submit a claim for the APD afterwards, will be be entitled to the whole £78, and not be subject to the cancellation fee?

Thanks in advance. :A

If you don't check in / show up then the refund is not obtainable.
If you cancel now as long as all tickets on one transaction then you will receive £78 APD less the £30.00 cancellation fee.

  • Hi Teahfc, Thanks for the help as I'm new to this. EasyJet's cancellation fee is £30 per passeger, so the cancellation fee for six persons (£180) is greater then the £78 APD that we would receive. I was under the impression that APD is only owed by EasyJet to the government for each passenger that actually travels, so are you sure it is no repayable when passengers do not show up? Thanks again! :-)

    From ABTA.
If you’ve had to cancel a flight and have been told the fare is non-refundable, contact the airline’s customer service department to request a tax refund. Note: a non-refundable ticket must be cancelled before the travel date otherwise you will be deemed a ‘no show’ and you will not be entitled to claim back the tax.

  • Thank you, as that saved me a lot of time. Too bad, but I was the one that chose non-refundable tickets wasn't I? Seems that the best option is to just not show up and not bother cancelling the seats as there is no purpose in letting EasyJet have more seats to sell, when I've already paid for them.

The £30 fee is per ticket and does not apply to APD.

The £30 fee comes into play when you request a refund within 24 hours of making a booking. You get all your money back less £30.

Once the 24 hour period has passed you can cancel and get a refund of £13 air passenger duty per passenger but nothing else, except in extreme cases such as bereavement.

EasyJet are happy to refund APD after the fact. As SaveTheEuro has pointed out, you (and the OP) have misunderstood how the cancellation fee works with easyJet.
  • Thanks for explaining that Savetheeuro. I was obviously very confused, but a little less so, thanks to you. :-) I knew that I had no right to expect the fare back on non-refundable tickets, but I thought I might be entitled to the APD back. So am I right in saying, that whether I cancel or just don't show up, I will still be entitled to the APD of £13 per passenger, so there is no reason not to do to it right away, as I'm 100% sure that we cannot fly? For a third time, thanks so much for the help!

Yes indeed. Cancel now and ask for the APD back.

Other airlines impose an administration fee making it pointless to request APD back but easyJet have a good reputation for refunding it in full.

I have previously claimed back APD from Easyjet. The cancellation fee was more than the cost of the flight, so I just didn't turn up and then dropped them an email. They refunded the APD without quibble. This was about 12 months ago.
