Try googling 'algebra graph method'. Quadratic equations are something else.

I don't ever remember doing this, but my DD was telling me that they'd started learning it last week, she's only in yr8 though, is he sure he hasn't done it at some stage before, just a simpler version?

Some schools are cancelling the Nov exams due to Goves
new announcements. They are terming it stick or twist.

You could always buy a revision guide and as said above, teach it to yourself. I remember having to do this with my GCSE Biology.

I would definitely call the teacher next week and discuss your worries and check the exam is going ahead in line with the new announcements.

    Oooh thanks for that.
I've not heard anything about this. Very interesting!

Over reacting you don't need to get angry or upset it will just unsettle your son, calmly discussing it with the school is the answer, if he hasn't done enough to pass the exam they can either make time to cover key parts of the syllabus or he can take it at the end of the year.

I didn't make anything of it in front of my son, told him the teacher had rang (he had already mentioned to me the teacher was going to phone anyway) and that he is doing extremely well and we are all very proud of him.
The rest of the conversation was repeated to my husband by me.

Like you all say, I'll wait and see what the teacher has to say next week.

    Thanks for the replies x

Do schools seriously only teach something that will be a question on exams for the first time a couple of weeks before the exam takes place? I'm shocked, No I don't think it's enough time. What if he doesn't grasp it to start off with.

I think in your position and if I could afford it, I'd be on the phone to a private tutor, if your DS is adamant he will be taking the exam.

I did look up but it's not the right thing.

The graph showed a u shape on it but the are no points on the axis but you have to find the point of co ordinates of the lowest point in the U. He understood vaguely the concept but not how to do it.
The teacher has the paper so I can't post the sum. It would've been great to have someone go through it with him independently on here. Without him being given the answer.

Hi spendless, yes sadly it does seem that the school only teach to get through the exams. Same thing with both his history and Spanish GCSE's
The teachers put on extra lessons to show the kids how to answer the questions :-(
The bright kids are fast tracked. My ds has already taken history, Spanish, English lit, science GCSE's along with BTech IT.
He still has English language, maths, higher science, triple science, IT, photography and another I can't think of left to do.
If the maths is taken in Nov he will then do further maths (statistics) in may/June.
    No pressure then eh?!!!!

It seems a strange way round to take the exams though. My DD is in year 10, and since she is in the higher stream for maths she is due to take gcse statistics this summer, and the full maths gcse in year 11, in the following summer. I'm not worried about the statistics exam because that's not something that is likely to be important in her future career, but I wouldn't be happy with her being entered for maths gcse early if waiting until the summer might make the difference between a B grade and an A grade.

I'm in the B not being good enough camp. He's obviously bright and sounds like he could get an even higher grade so why enter now when the course hasn't been fully taught to him? I stopped my DD entering her GCSE a year early. Teacher wasn't happy but it was what was best for her. If your son wants to sit it though I guess that's what matters.

Don't panic, you could probably teach it him in about 10minutes (solve for x=0 and y=0 to find the intercepts on the graph).

ETA: Saw your further post, the above is for a linear equation, U shaped curve, you're correct is a quadratic equation and here's some info on using a graph to solve one: http://www.s-cool.co.uk/gcse/maths/graphs/revise-it/algebraic-graphs
