sitting at lights with foot on the brakes - why

Not quite that simple. We become more sensitive to glare because the lenses of our eyes thicken and the pupils become smaller. I understand a 55-year old takes eight times longer to recover from glare than a 17-year old.
All the more reason then, to go to the opticians and see if they can help.
I wear glasses and have regular eye tests and if I found I was having problems with increased glare I would mention it to the optician and have a specific pair of driving glasses if needed. Or even something like these.0 -
Too true! I ould usually keep my foot on the brake to allow for airheads to stop before my boot rather than once they've hit it!0

I have just read an interesting article, about the Flash for Cash - Crash scam that the organised crime gangs, are now trying on innocent British motorists.

If you're sat in D with your foot on the brakes and someone goes in the back of you, your foot is going to come off and the car will set off.
Genuinely misunderstood that then and thought you were exaggerating for effect. I now realise you mean your foot will come off the pedal. LolAre the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation? :cool:0 -

That's why I keep my foot on the clutch and brake to prevent the stop/start kicking in if it looks as though the wait might not be that long.0 -
A simple answer to the OP's question is that it's because people are lazy.
Regardless of whether a vehicle is a manual or an auto you can still put the handbrake on and not wait with your feet on the brake pedal.
I sometimes keep my foot on the brake pedal (so other traffic can see my brake lights) and have my handbrake on so if I get hit I won't roll into the vehicle in front.
When I took my driving lessons in 1997 I was told that if you're waiting for longer than five seconds you should use the handbrake, there's also less chance of the vehicle rolling backwards when you find the bite of the clutch. With your foot on the brake, if your on a hill you'll move backwards whilst you move your foot over to the accelerator
OP, I'm surprised that you need to ask any of this TBH as you are a driver yourself0 -
Haha you lot are amusing. Not alot of fact. Lights that get brighter the harder you brake???? !!!!!!? Auto that wont go from D to N easily. Er wot? I leave me lights on and if they dazzle you, you know them bright lights the dazzling ones, then theres summit up with your eyes....omg. id say you need checking if they aint bright n dazzling.
And a lot more....anyway; anyone remember driving lessons? Youre suposed to put the handbrake on cos it dont dazzle other users and it means you have full control of your vehicle even if you get out and shout at the geezer in front or whatever. And your out of gear ready to move the appropiate gear for setting off when the lights change. Im thinking it may be a minor fault on the test but cant remember for sure and maybe in the highway code but i cant be bovvered to check. Laziness is probbably the main reason why peps do it0 -
