Fraud after credit card account closed

I am considering closing my credit card account and applying for a new one with a new company. My existing card's security may have been compromised (Adobe security breach by hackers). If after my account is closed someone tries to authorise a payment fraudulently will it just bounce back or will the old credit card company pass it on to the new credit card provider?

The old credit card company will either refuse the payment or charge it to you anyway.

It won't get passed on to another provider

I assume you've reported it to your existing cardholder ??

  • I am about to. No fraud as yet. Adobe are claiming that the credit card details were encrypted. I am just interested in what the law or industry practice has to say about transactions subsequent to closure.
  • To dzug1 ... if the account has closed how can they do anything other than return it?

If it's a new transaction it would be rejected, but if it was pre-authorised (eg a CPA) then it will be honoured.

If they decide that it was a pending transaction or a Continuous Payment Authority then they can reopen the account and charge it.

Also, there really is no reason to go to the trouble of moving to another company. Just report the card as compromised and the company will cancel it and issue you with a new card with a new number.
  • MBNA have just confirmed that nothing more than their usual security monitoring is appropriate at this time and in any case I am covered. Thanks for all your advice!:T
