I have a Nexus 4 but with a GiffGaff SIM. The symbols shown next to the signal bars mean the following (as far as I am aware):

    G - 2G or GPRS
    E - 2G or EDGE (Sometimes called 2.5G)
    3G - 3G
    H - 4g HSPA+ (Sometimes called 3.5G)

4g LTE doesn't exist in the Nexus 4. (Some say the N4 is capable but would need a firmware flash).

Check the network settings - you may have set it to HSPDA (iirc) only instead of allowing GSM too. If there is no 3G signal and you don't allow GSM it won't work at all. If you do allow GSM it should work but IME you need to take a book with you to read between each response.

2G should also give you internet, just slower.

does the xperia show it was 3G and what is the signal strength of it ?

Perhaps there isn't enough 3G signal, but the xperia is just about picking it up

You can access a Testing menu that shows additional networking options by opening your standard dialer app and typing in *#*#4636#*#* and waiting a few seconds. Under Phone Info there's a droplist selection for preferred network type - maybe try playing with those?

    (Mine shows WCDMA preferred).

That was the acronymn I was trying to remember.

Android settings vary from release to release so I can't give an exact navigation. On my 2.3.3 phone it is settings/wireless and networks/mobile networks/network mode where I get the choice of WCDMA only|GSM only|GSM / WCDMA auto. I imagine you should be able to find yours by a similar route

On the Nexus 4 the mobile settings are at Settings | Wireless & Networks | More | Mobile Networks. I have screenshot the contents of Mobile networks from my own Nexus 4 below:
