Cat D write-off documents?

Options
Hello everyone, please help me. I am looking at this Ford fiesta 2005 car which I really liked and so I put the deposit to keep the car for £250. However, this evening I just found out through hpi check that the car has been written off as Cat D and the seller has not informed anything about it. (he showed me the V5 document and the car is still under ford warranty till next yr)

I called up my insurance company where I had my first car insurance and they said I need to provide them an engineer report?! I just searched around and found some which are over £120-165 and with one for like £50-75. I would like to ask if anyone knows how long does the process take? and where would be best to get it? Also does the seller have to have an engineer report anyway to get V5? or is it additional thing?

I was planning to pick the car up tomorrow but maybe will have to have a real discussion about this to the seller, so I would like to ask if you all would kindly give me any advice on how to get this done? and how to do with the deal pls?
PS. The car has been properly repaired (from my eyes anyway lol) and it is at £3900, I wonder if that is expensive price to pay for Cat D car as well?

THank you very much for your help.

I would get your deposit back and buy somewhere else, the seller hasn't been honest with you, avoid.

@sasha777 - I just had a look on the Parker's website and it looks like you're only getting a GBP300 discount over the 'private poor' price Parker quotes. In my opinion this isn't really enough, especially if you have additional expenses to provide an engineer's report in the first place.

On a cat D you don't have to get an engineers report to get a V5, nor do you have to jump through the additional hoops you have to jump through to get the car registered like you do with a cat C.

The main problem I see with buying a repaired write-off is that you can't tell exactly what's been done unless the seller shows you all the invoices and report from the insurance assessor. Plus, you can't often judge the quality of the repair as it tend to be hidden under the shiny (or not so shiny) paintwork. Depending on when it has been repaired it's not unusual for rust to bubble through after a couple of years because the repair's been done in a cheap and nasty way. All in all I'd go with Inactive's suggestion of getting the deposit back.

@Inactive - while I totally agree with the sentiment, the seller is not obliged to disclose that a car's been written off and repaired unless you specifically ask them. But nevertheless I'd hope that the seller would tell me something as important as this.

Hi.. My husband repairs cars for a living and I have had several Cat D and Cat C cars.. As previously said if it's a Cat D you don't need any additional inspections and for a Cat C the only additional thing we've had to have done is a VIC check (Vehicle Identity Check.. to stop ringing)
Cat C cars are usually work 25% less than the list price but I'm sorry I don't know about Cat D valuations:confused:

IMO and going off what mrtg is saying, the price is far too high - personally I wouldn't pay much more than half the car's book value if it is a write off - you will have problems selling it when you want to get rid (unless you try and deceive someone like your seller is doing).

THank you very much for your help.

Cat anything is the kiss of death, unless the car is really cheap (which it's not) get your depostit back and find another one.

The world is full of cars...
    The money, Dave...
