Skype Home unavailable

I hope someone can help me. I have been using Skype successfully for years but when I log on to it now I get a message saying 'Skype Home is unavailable' and the 'change your status' button won't let me do anything. I have tried signing out and back in again with no luck.
Does anyone know of any good alternatives to Skype? I have Windows 7 on my laptop.
I would be grateful for any advice, please!
