Opening a USD bank account

Hi all,
Thanks for reading.
I would like to open a bank account which has a balance in dollars, so people can pay in dollars and I can withdraw in dollars. I called NatWest (my bank) and the chap wasn't too sure if they provided such a service but that if they did I would have to have a "private banking" account, which involves having assets of over £50k or something along those lines.
Does anyone have any pointers for me? I am not wealthy and it is probably fair to say I have poor credit (no CCJs/ IVA/ Bankruptcy or anything like that though)
