Insurance for wheelchair accessible vehicle

Just about to take delivery of a vehicle ( VW Caddy Maxi ) to carry daughter's wheelchair.
Decided to buy rather than Motability.

Can anyone please recommend an insurance company ?

Many thanks, Bob

I'd first contact a broker and explain what the vehicle is, adaption and the costs etc. then use their quote as the ball park figure.

Then try and phone a few companies direct so you have something to compare with the brokers.

I'd start with More Than / RSA since they (or were) the company Motability use, so should have a better idea about WAV, but also try the likes of LV etc just so you can get an overall picture.

Its hard to use web sites (Go Compare, etc) since there isn't a box to tick for a WAV, but its worth trying a couple of those types of sites just to see if there is any difference. If you can buy it over the Internet remember to use https://www.quidco.com to see if you can get any extra Cashback.

I get insurance like everyone else, I use the comparison sites then I ring the cheapest company/s to let them know that my vehicle is a WAV and then take out the insurance online and then both email and phone them to make sure that my details are correct on my policy.

My vehicle is very heavily adapted, its a drive from powerchair Chrylser Grand Voyager (Paravan conversion) and I have been insured with all the big name companies without problems, I dont see the need to pay a "specialist" firm more than three times more to insure my vehicle.

If you ring say "chartwells" they will give you horror stories of why you "must use them" but its tosh, I did use them before, pre widespread internet use but I got wise, insurance companies cannot charge you more because your car is adapted, that is enshrined in Law.
  • I use Fish Insurance, they are specialist insurance for the disabled. They were only £300 a year compared to £900 for the same policy with directline. I have a VW Caddy Ican which is very heavily adapted to drive from a power chair.
    Hope this helps x
