Money paid into wrong account

I am writing on behalf on my girlfriend.
She has paid money into an account to pay for her university accomodation (£2000). The trouble is that the halls of residance has been taken over by a new company and the old company has ceased to exist. The money was accidently paid into the old company's account, even though the company no longer exists, the account still does.
She has instructed her bank to send a letter to the account holder requesting the money to be sent back and has not heard anything. Since the company no longer exists, there is nobody to contact to chase this up.
What should we do? We have contacted the police but they have not been much help. They say how can the money be paid to a company that doesnt exist!
Any information would be much appreciated

What has actually happened to the old company? Is it in liquidation or has it already been wound up? I don't know the solution, but these answers will help the more knowledgeable users on here.0

What was the name of the company? It is possible to check the exact position of the company via companies house or third party sources. This will then give a clue as to the chances of getting the money back.0

The company is called "opal warehouse ltd". I Believe it is currently in administration.
Thanks for the replies0 -
If it it is in administration then there is an administrator?
Ernst and Young? https://www.duedil.com/company/03673654/opal-warehouse-limited0 -
Appears to be part of Opal Property Group Limited which is in administration. Leslie Ross, Daniel Smith and David Riley were appointed Joint Administrators of Opal Property Group Limited on 14 March 2013. http://opalgroup.com/about-us/.0

There is big difference between not being in existance and administration. The company would gave to move into Receivership and then to be wound up. The main worry is the account is probably into overdraft, and the £2k credit simply reduced this.
As you cannot reverse this, it would be up to the administrators to agree the error took place and that the funds were accepted in error, however in an O/d situation the bank is not going to reduce its exposure simply because someone made a mistake.
You can ask, but you may find you'll be treated as a creditor and only get pence in the pound back, if that.0 -
The money was accidently paid
How exactly did the "accidental" payment occur?0
