Ideas for cheaper peak seasons holidays

For the last 4 years we have had off-peak holidays with our daughter, son-in-law and our pre-school grandchild - houses, mobile homes, etc.
But now he has started school and apparently the school frowns on taking children out of school in term time. We were planning to go to a mobile in France but the cost is astonomical in the summer (half a car in my daughter's terms).
So where can we go for a fortnight in this country (please don't suggest camping as my daughter is very anti!).
Preferably southern half of country as we are based in Wiltshire.

Youth Hostel Association (YHA). There's plenty in your area some of which are open during the school holidays.
Here's the map for the south west:

And this is the Swanage hostel to give you an idea of what they offer:

You could try canal boat hire. It depends what you call 'cheaper' though.
Here's a boatyard in Bath which I picked out because they show prices and availability. I have no idea how reliable they are.

Here's a website which shows English and Welsh waterways:

There are plenty of holiday cottages, just stay away from the popular areas such as the south west. Norfolk, Suffolk, Pembrokeshire (Cornwall without the problems) are all worth a look.0

As you know, peak season is peak season for exactly the reason you have discovered. I think your hands are pretty tied to be honest, so last minute (as in a day or twos notice) deals may be your best bet?0
