So long as you are OK with locking some of it up for at least a year, you could consider some of the NS&I investments http://195.171.4.123/products/index.jsp You can currently invest 30K (2x15k) in index-linked savings and 30K (2x15k) in fixed rate savings. These are all tax-free so will be most effective if you are a higher rate taxpayer. The terms for each are quoted as longer than 1 year but so long as you leave the investments in place for 1 year there are no early withdrawal penalties. Note that if you do take out the capital in the first year you will get no interest at all. The same people do premium bonds (up to 30K) but obviously returns on these (tax-free winnings) are not guaranteed. ) but appreciate that this approach will not suit everyone.
To be honest there isn't much you can do with that ammount without the taxman taking most of it from you at some point...

What do you mean by safely?
Risk is very important to consider but "safely" to one person can mean something different to another depending on what they are comparing it to.
If you are after a monthly amount then you have to be careful with the real "safe" options like deposit based accounts as your capital value will drop over time in real terms. For example, if you withdraw the interest each month then after 10 years your £60k will have the spending power of around £42k. You would have lost £18k in real terms by being too safe.
That means you need to consider some risk based products in an attempt to get income and growth. That doesnt mean jumping in at the deep end and going crazy but by utilising the lower risk end of investments.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
