mervyn11 - posts no 4 and no 6 of this thread should explain why! Those are the words of people who have EXPERIENCED what can happen if you don't bother with a 'flamin' complicated' course of action.

Just so you all know ... we have got an electrician coming tomorrow morning to put in a new socket, costing £50 but at least I will have complete peace of mind. Thanks for all your replies.

Both the extension leads linked to WERE 13 amp rated (i.e fit for the load) and WERE NOT drum type extensions (i.e could not be left "wound up").

They would have been fine for the job needed. The cause of the problems referred to in posts 4 & 6 seem to have been due to leaving cable wound on the drum.

    Money saving?

Even though it's too late now, you could make up a high quality extension lead using decent quality cable, plug and socket.

Or, check the washing machine for any tamper-proof stickers etc, carefully take off the cover and swap for longer cable, it's usually just spade connectors holding them on. Then if the washing machine breaks down within the warrenty period, swap back to the standard cable ;)
