Both the extension leads linked to WERE 13 amp rated (i.e fit for the load) and WERE NOT drum type extensions (i.e could not be left "wound up").
They would have been fine for the job needed. The cause of the problems referred to in posts 4 & 6 seem to have been due to leaving cable wound on the drum.

Even though it's too late now, you could make up a high quality extension lead using decent quality cable, plug and socket.
Or, check the washing machine for any tamper-proof stickers etc, carefully take off the cover and swap for longer cable, it's usually just spade connectors holding them on. Then if the washing machine breaks down within the warrenty period, swap back to the standard cable0
