Cannot delete folders on external HD

I have a Humax HD Fox T2 receiver and have recently purchased an EXT160GBHDD External USB 160GB hard drive to record programs. They work well together and I am very pleased except for one thing: when a series of programs has been watched and deleted from the hard drive the containing folder stays and I can find no way to delete it through the T2 box. I have also tried to connect the drive to my PC to see if they could be deleted from there but my machine doesn't see it and the HDD light on the drive flashes red intermittently which is presumably a warning?

I would assume that by formatting the external drive again through the T2 box I will finish up with an empty drive but that isn't convenient at the moment because there are other files I wish to watch.

Can anyone suggest a methodology whereby redundant folders can be deleted without the need to format?

I had previously posted this question on the Digital TV forum at https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/63338267#Comment_63338267 but have been advised to ask here.

Your Windows PC won't recognise the way the T2's drive has been formatted. So don't worry about it! ^__^

Even Linux pc's will have problems as it doesn't write the partition information correctly. You have to repair the partition in Linux for it to be seen properly.

As for folders... try this :

Aha - fantastic. will try that later. I guessed there'd be a simple answer.

    Thank you. :)
