2 story extension advice.

I'm trying to find out about regulartions around building a 2 story extension.

The house faces east teh garden faces south
to the left of the house (so south) .. there is a space for a double garage - currently there is a single garage and a gap
Next house along - has a garage and this is attached to a bungalow

so
W

S bungalow ..garage...garage...space..3 floor detached.house N

E
I want to knock down the Garage and space and put in a 2 story extension. Is this possible? How much spave does there need to be between the 'new house' and the neightbours boundry/garage (garages meet on the boundary)

Can anyone help or advise please :)_

TY
