Halifax clarity application problems

in Credit cards
Hello - i applied for the clarity card online almost a month ago. My initial application encountered a problem online and i was advised to 'try again'. I did, thinking the first attempt had not run a credit check given the problem with the connection, and i was declined citing my previous application (can't apply more than once in a 30 day period).
I did not get an answer on my first application and haven't received a letter or email with a response. I phoned halifax and was passed between a few different depts, they had problems locating the application and was told to go into a branch. I did, and they simply handed me the customer service phone and was passed back to the applications team, who eventually located my application and told me i had been declined reason citing 'it may have something to do with your credit score/the way you manage your current account'.
Am really confused as i have an excellent score, have managed my one other credit card very sensibly, have a reward current account with Halifax, have never touched my overdraft and pay in a good salary every month.
I wrote to the branch manager at my local branch appealing the decision attaching credit card statements/payslips/copy of my passport etc and three weeks later am yet to hear back. Am not sure what else to do - has any one else appealed a decision with Halifax, if so where did you write to as all my contact with the company seems to fall into a huge black hole with no response! Keen to get it sorted as off to the US in 6 weeks and was hoping to have all sorted by then. Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
