Spam caller 1471 reports my own number

It looks like a worrying development in the scam/spam calls debacle.
Today I received a call at 10.16 am from someone purporting to be from Accident Helpline on my home phone, told them I was on TPS and they hung up.
On dialling 1471 the call registered at 10.16am was reported as my own telephone number.
I have not received an sms message as far as I am aware and so do not think that can be the answer.
Has anyone else had this happen or can shed any light?
Is it possible for callers to now mask their number and substitute another number?
Can I be charged for the call, that would be rubbing salt into the wound?

Fake phone numbers are easy, Just like fame email addresses.
Its easy for me to send you an email that appears to be from yourself.
No you wont be charged.
Its been possible to fake phone numbers for a long time. I knew a guy that worked on the security side of mobile phones. He phone me from a number i made up. 101010.
And thats the number that came up on my caller display.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Thanks, good to know at least I won't be charged for the nuisance call.
I do wish it wasn't possible to fake or withold a number as this makes it far too easy for these nuisance callers. Let's hope this review of the TPS and call centres will have some effect.0 -
I don't believe it was a faked CLI, to what benefit? And WHAT 'charge'? Most incoming calls are free!
It would more than likely be a glitch, and the proof would be on your bill, along with the duration if you inadvertently initiated a chargeable call on your itemised billing.0 -
Hi Buzby
As to what benefit, only the caller would know, pure devilment I would suspect, I asked a caller what their address was some months ago and they said "you should know it, it's in the red light district where your Mother works"
The charge I was referring to - I wondered if it was possible that if they faked my number on 1471 then was it possible I would be charged as it purported to come from my own number.
I know exactly when the call was made as I was working on my computer and noticed the time of the call, I checked immediately after and 1471 confirmed this time at 10.16 a.m. I have checked my itemised billing with my sky account online and I certainly made no call to my number on that day or any other. The previous post in this thread confirms that this is possible, therefore I conclude that this is almost certainly the case.0 -
Surely the benefit to the caller is that they can get through to sell you whatever it is they are selling. No call blocker will work if the numbers are being continually altered.
Also you can't report them to TPS because you don't know their real number.0 -
I'm sure I read on another forum that a number left on 1471 did not correspond to a real number. You are right LesU the whole point in concealing their number is to do just that, conceal the number so that they avoid any consequences. It's about time this loophole was addressed.
Just had another call interrupt my typing this post, advising me of the government window scrappage scheme, bet there is no such thing, caller witheld their number....grrrr0 -
At least yours call in the daytime. My dodgy international calls start at 9:30 - 10pm and go on until about 4am.
Although one day it did say 9am. Nuisance call blocking phones seem to be doing the job.
Another number added today. Some PPI scammer.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
