Which is the best iPad?

I want to buy an iPad for hubby's birthday, but have no idea which one to get...

I know the newest is the iPad 4 (I think), but don't know the benefits of one against another.

A chap at work said he bought one ages ago but couldn't use it to connect to the internet. When he finally got the right one, he then had to pay every month for his internet useage. So would I (or hubby) have to have some sort of contract, or could he just pick up wifi at home (or out and about)...?

We both have iphones, but he's not very technical - his phone is my old 3g one. I'm on PAYG and he's on a contract - don't know if this makes any difference...

Sorry about all the questions, bit I hope you can help me..!

The best Ipad is quite simply the Ipad 4, it has the same high resolution screen as the Ipad 3 but its internal hardware is newer and faster. This difference has been noticeable already with some people reporting the Ipad 3 (despite not being that old) struggling more than expected with IOS7 (the current version of the Apple mobile OS) while the Ipad 4 is fine. It uses the new lightning connector rather than the larger 30 pin connector which may be an annoyance as it won't work with accessories for your older Iphone but going forward it's the standard Apple are using.

You can buy Ipads with varying amounts of onboard memory (which isn't expandable) and you can also choose to have one with just wifi or with wifi and mobile data access which Apple label as 'wifi and cellular'. If you choose the latter you can go online outwith wireless access points but as you've mentioned, you will need to have a sim card with data capability. If you're not fussed about that you can stick with a wifi version which will work with a wireless access point and usually a good bit cheaper as well.

I have the iPad 2 and have no problems with it at all. I use mostly at home so just have the wifi version.

I also recommend the apple ipad 4, the screen is really good and its fairly easy to set up and use.
I have also used an ipad mini which seems fine but i prefer the larger screen.
  • iPad 4 it is then.

Just need to find the best deal now... Thanks chaps!

If you can bare holding out for a couple weeks, the new iPad will probably be out then.

One thing to bare in mind, the wi-fi only iPads don't come with GPS.

I never realised that only 3G iPads have GPS. That's hilarious!
Anyway, DO NOT buy an iPad 4 right now, we're expecting a new one to be announced mid/late Oct and launched early Nov...

It's his birthday on 13th October, but I will definitely hold out for the newer/better one. I'll have to print out a picture of it and put it in the card so he knows what he's getting, lol!

Thanks to everyone for your advice - I'd have had no idea without you lot...!:j:T:)

My Dad's birthday is the 21st so we're in a similar situation. He's fairly tech savvy though and would much rather wait...
