Hello people

After some advice on choosing the right gas and electric supplier for our first property. I'm very money conscious and am trying my best to shop around. My problem is, when trying to find the best company, all compasison sites want my bill prices and being a first house, we don't have any. Anyone know of any websites that can help me with out bill prices?

Many Thanks

Vici :D

    Welcome to the forum.
There is no easy way to work out who is best if you don't have a consumption history.

You could ask the current occupants for their data. If this is not available simply enter the national average for units(kWh) in the comparison sites. This is 20,500kWh pa for gas and 3,300kWh for electricity.

Do NOT enter costs in these comparison sites but always use kWh.

You will initially have to use the company who is currently supplying your new property and it will take some weeks to change over to a new company.

Thank you very much Cardew :)

I thought about asking who is currently supplying however the property is empty at the min. Think the lady dies and the seller inherited it. Been sitting empty for a while. Any clues as to how i find out about who was last supplier as i'm assuming i have to go to them?

I doubt if the Gas or electricity will be cut off. Just switch on and note meter readings when you move in.

The old supplier will normally have addressed a letter to 'The Occupier'.

Moving into a house for the first time, it should be the last thing you should worry about initially. The difference in price between the most expensive supplier and the cheapest in summer(no heating) will not be much for a few weeks.

    Try https://www.uswitch.com

It asks how many showers you have per day, how many times you flush toilet etc to give you a guesstimate (in the same way the supplier would if you rang them, similar kind of questions)

The relevance of flushing toilets etc to consumption of gas and electricity is?

Thanks for your help guys. I'll just have to see what happens when we go in.

Cardew, not the most important thing initially?

If there are no letters from the existing utility, then the company that owns the pipelines/cables can tell you. Usually for gas this is Transco/Xoserve and for electricity your local MPAS service.

I moved into my new house a year ago and switched immediately to Good Energy for my electricity - they couldn't give me a quote as I hadn't lived there long enough, but accepted what I told them I'd spent in the flat I rented before (I moved from 1 bedroom flat to 3 bedroom house, so added a small amount on for the increase in size, and have actually used less than that!) after I explained that I lived on my own, had insulation, wasn't in often etc etc.
