Misleading Baggage Allowances

My fiance and I booked a Hotel, Flight and Transfer to Portugal through ASDA travel and travel out tomorrow.

To cut a long story short - whilst on the phone to Monarch they told me that I've only paid for one bag and if we wanted to take a bag each, I'd be charged an additional £50. I've gone ahead and paid it. I simply don't want to be delayed (or fleeced) at the airport for an additional bag.

On the face of it, this seems fair enough but my confirmation email from ASDA says that I have purchased:

"Extras - 1 bag (per person) @ £36.88 x 1 = £36.88"

My interpretation of this is that I am allowed 1 bag, per person. i.e. 2 bags. Maybe I should questioned it more at the time. Regardless of what it actually means, its not too far a leap to accept that it could be interpreted this way.

The upshot is that ASDA travel are refusing to re-reimburse the cost of the additional bag. I'm trying to go through their official processes, in the hope it can get resolved quicker.

Do I have any rights at all when it comes to getting refunded?

Perhaps forking out the £50 was the wrong thing to do, but I just wanted a smooth holiday!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The way I read it is each person can only take 1 bag and its £36.88 per bag, and that the (x1) means youve just booked the one bag.

Some people will book 2 seats but take 1 big bag between them and the rest of clothes in hand luggage - hence the per person.

At least you got it checked and sorted before you went to the airport that wouldn't been a nice price xx

    Hi,

It does sound like you had only orginally paid for 1 bag for 1 person. However if you were not informed on this I would go back to the store and query this.
At least you have sorted it now rather than at the airport as you would of been charged a bigger amount.

I read that as you had no luggage allowance and you have paid for 1 bag each though cant work out why you say £50?

    It's not clear.
Did you pay Asda with a credit card?

Presumably the ASDA price, as part of a package, was less than the airline price.
  • Thanks for the replies.

I've just returned from holiday and ill now try to pursue getting some of my money back.

I'm glad others see it as being unclear also! Unfortunately i paid the entire balance with my debit card, so no credit card rights to fall back on!

The £50 was the additional amount that monarch charged for an additional bag. If i had bought the bag at the time of booking through asda it would have cost £36.

I'm of the opinion that: I have a confirmation that says I have 1 bag per person for £36. Confusing or not, it's not my mistake and I feel I should be entitled to my additional £50 back.

My next step is to send a written complaint to asda. They may just accept it and pay up. Is there a regulatory body for asda travel? I'm confused, as they say they are not a "travel agent" which I assume makes them excempt from certain rules (otherwise they wouldn't tell me) .

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Yep that's how I read it as well.
My advise is forget it and move on, don't spoil your holiday memorys by getting into an argument now.
You only paid for 1 bag you were lucky to sort it out before the airport

Although not the best written sentence I have to say its 1 bag you've bought. I really don't see Asda changing their stance on this one...at best I would push for the difference from what you would have paid had you pre-paid for two bags....

Sorry but it reads to me that you originally paid for 1 bag between the 2 of you

I don't see how it reads as anything else

    "Extras - 1 bag (per person) @ £36.88 x 1 = £36.88

If you had booked 2 bags it would have read

    Extras - 1 bag (per person) @ £36.88 x 2 = £73.76

I don't see that there is anything worth pursuing
