Thanks Canucklehead. I'm confused. I thought it was condensing, but I don't think there's anything going to a drain if that's what you mean? How do I know if it's condensing and what's the difference? Not that I'm completely clueless or anything.

Good morning: The Energy Saving Trust has more on condensing boilers here
    http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/home_improvements/heating_and_hot_water/what_is_a_high_efficiency_condensing_boiler and here ... http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/uploads/documents/housingbuildings/CE52%20-%20domestic%20condensing%20boilers%20(GIL74).pdf

To find out if your boiler is a condensing model visit Vaillant's site at

    https://www.vaillant.co.uk and find your model

    Or... http://www.sedbuk.com/mainindex.htm

put it on a BG service contract (therefore you wont be forking out unexpectedly for massive repairs)

This is what we have done, and are now holding a quote from british gas for £800 for a flush of the system. The one thing (apparently) which isn't covered by our all singing, all dancing contract with them.

We are in bits here - we just cannot afford that kind of money for a flush of the system, and can't see a way out at all. Looks like we'll be doing without hot water for the foreseeable future, and will also be without the heating when the cold weather sets in. FGS - the stupid system's only 6 years old (company which installed it is now out of business).

So just be aware when you take out these contracts with BG - NOT everything is covered.

Good morning: £800 for a powerflush??? Extortionate to say the very least...you could buy a new boiler for that money ( with extra £££ for installation, commissioning, and notification to Building Control) How long have you had a service contract with BG? I would think they would have checked out your system before taking it on and discovered this issue. Has your system had regular i.e. annual service over the last 6 years and was it correctly installed and commissioned in the first case (system flushed when boiler installed for example...this is best practice and recommended/required by manufacturer) ? How did you discover your system needed a flush?

    Good luck.

In all fairness the sludge is not BGs fault and that is why they are quoting you for a powerflush. The standard price for BG is £679 for 6 rads, dependant on how many rads you have this can increase significantly (30mins labour per rad) you will probably get it cheaper from a local company

The reason your system is so dirty is poor commisioning (the most important part of an installation but usually the bit thats not done because of the time taken and the customer wont see it until its too late)

i suspect you've been advised after a faulty water component being replaced as water testing is not in BGs procedures for a 1st visit inspection

you dont have to get it done right away, or you could even drain the system down and add some cleanser to see if it will clear it a bit.

i feel for you because i see this on a daily basis and there is f all i can do about it. Its just one of those things that is going to keep happening unless boilers start getting installed correctly
  • ixwood, an easier way to tell is count the connections on the bottom of the boiler .... 6 for a standard combi ... 7 for a condenser

    combi :- flow,return,cold mains,gas,pr pipe,hot tap

cond :- same but also a condensate drain
