Switching electricity supplier - do I need to cancel the old one?

Hi all,

Currently with Eon and we've just switched to British Gas, which will changeover towards the end of the month.

Do we need to cancel with Eon or is this done automatically?

No, tell them nothing, it'll be a nice surprise.

Yes, BG will tell them the good news. Eon will no doubt be in touch to plead with you, so change your phone. no. on your account now ;)

As Mr K says the work is carried out by the new supplier British Gas.

What you do need to do is to dig out your most recent bill from Eon and check the meter readings on your bill with your current actual meter readings. You should then estimate what the balance of your bill will be so you know whether you are due to pay money to Eon or receive some money back from them.

Once you have switched to British Gas and they have told you the starting dates check the start meter reads that they are using and compare them with Eon's reads. Note that you should keep this information safe until you receive the final bill from Eon - sometimes suppliers can take a ridiculous time to generate them.

Thanks. The last point is kind of what has triggered this question - we did the switch a couple of weeks ago and have heard nothing from Eon since. The switch happens the day before we come back from holiday so will be easy to check then to ensure the meter readings for both are correct.
