Advice before buying-tablet

Another tablet post...sorry.
I want to buy a 7 " tablet mainly for emails, kindle, and watching downloaded programs (mainly from bbciplayer) while travelling. Maybe use as a camera on the adhoc occasion.
We have an ipad which is great but needs to stay at home while am away for DD and OH.
I have a laptop for work.
I would like to pay less than £100 ...
I have seen this one but the specs go a bit over my head..i dont know the company either...
Any advice on this or others would be welcome..thanks

A very mediocre tablet for £90, far, far too expensive.

I know you set a budget of £100 and I am always keen to keep to peoples budgets but I have to point out the new Tesco Hudl, its £119 and blows the one you linked out the water on spec, in fact its a close match to a Google Nexus but cheaper (I am sure this is deliberate ;))

The one you link to has a poor capacity battery so will be poor for long trips watching video but the Hudl has a very long life battery and high quality screen.

If you can find the extra £20 you will get a far more useful device, its a great buy. Got any clubpoints?

have a look at the natpc tablets sold on amazon by wendy lou and others - £70ish gets you a 9.2" screen, dual cameras, etc - I've got one and it's very good, and cheap enough to take out and about. There's a 7" version for around £45

    9" £70 delivered

  • thanks GunJack. Also interested especially as I have Amazon vouchers..only about £30 but everything helps!
One of the comments put on Amazon is that you can not view iplayer on it? and another say you can... is that the case? As I would like to be able to do so and download programs... thanks for letting me know for your experience on yours.

If mainly for watching iplayer download, then would be best to avoid those 2 on amazon, the one running 2.2 (not a chance). One running 4.0, maybe but why risk it.

The hudl does look good, good specs. The internal memory is ok, 16 gb, so leaves 12gb for apps and downloads. The iplayer download to internal memory only.

Am I right in thinking, the Hudl doesn't have a wireless internet connection of its own?

If so, could I use it through a MiFi Dongle?

EDIT: I notice it comes with a "1m USB to Micro-USB cable".

I'm guessing that means it has a USB socket.

Any chance I could connect a Wireless Dongle to that socket?

The USB may only be for charging.

It is not 3G(4G) capable, but for that price, no wonder. If you want a capable device that does what you want, including iplayer, look at paying more.

Yes you can use a mifi device with it (but not a wireless dongle, unless done though conversion and the usb assuming you can use it that way, and it works). It may not work, so if you're buying something to begin with just do a mifi device. easier.
Unless you have a smart phone capable of doing that itself.

You can buy devices second hand/unlocked/on offer then unlock, and shop around for a suitable sim for your needs. Signing up for a contract on them can be expensive.
  • If I understand you correctly, lifeforms, a Hudl and a MiFi Dongle will get me on the net?

Do you have a smart phone? if so do you have some decent data allowance on your tariff...? A lot of people forget many phones can be used as a Mifi through something called tethering. One less thing to carry and charge.

You need a smartphone (dunno about Apple stuff) but most recent Androids will do.

A phone tariff that includes a reasonable mobile data allowance.

Finally the phone tariff must allow you to use tethering, some do, some don't.

Just to be clear we are meaning the same thing, the Hudl does have a wifi connection and can connect to the internet without being plugged in via your wifi router at home, or at a hotspot say in a cafe or a pub. Nothing else required.

If your talking about being completely mobile, so it works even in the middle of a field by using the mobile phone network to connect... yes you would need more bits like a 3G dongle and a special cable (called an OTG cable) to connect it to the tablet. Or just use a mifi device, no wires needed.
