They charged me £20 after my first year. I asked why they were charging for a free card, and they claimed that the small print shows they will charge fees after the first year.

Are you sure you have the Classic Extra? It says no annual fee:

So if you have been charged one I suggest you make a complaint and take it to FOS if necessary.0 -
@Wilma33 Ah, mine says Aspire World on it. It was listed on the credit cards page when I last checked. I think it had 1% cashback.
@You-kip do you work for them? You are not thinking about this properly. Look at the chart underneath and take £20 off everything:
Annual overall spend £3,000 £5,000 £10,000 £20,000
Yearly cashback £15 £25 £50 £100
It's basically worthless or costs you money if you spend less than £5,000 on it.0 -
I have an Aspire World, taken out late last year. I'm certain that was fee free at the time. Have managed to get over £160 cashback so far.0

There is no annual fee on my Aspire World. I just checked the summary box on the statement.0

My Aspire World card also has no annual fee. Have you looked at your summary box to see what it says?0

Ask them to identify whether the fee is annual fee or something else such as Late Payment, etc.
From their website:

"No annual fee"
This is also my own copy of Pre-Contract info that I keep for my Capital One Aspire
Annual membership Fee £0
Cash fee 3.0%
Minimum £3
Non-sterling transaction fee 0.00%
Balance transfer handling fee 3.0%
Copy statement fee £3 (maximum

Returned payment default sum £12
Overlimit Default Sum £12
Returned credit card cheque default sum £12.000 -
Quoting from my recent World Aspire Credit Agreement:You will pay us a fee for having the account ("Annual Fee"). The Annual Fee is currently £0.00 payable annually in advance for each year or part of year.
They would have to give you 30 days notice in writing to change this.
ISTR there was an older Aspire World card before the most recent incarnation.MFiT-T3 #149: {Q4/14} (£46,447)-->(£0) ~ +£46,447=100%

I had one of their older Aspire cards with the annual fee, and even then it was only £18. I don't think they've ever charged £20 annual fee (and they definitely wouldn't have waived it for the first year!)
Whatever you've been charged, I don't think it's an annual fee0 -
I have an older world mastercard where the fee is £18 but there is an annual bonus for £10.
Clearly there are many incarnations.
Ideally you should keep the inform they send you initially because they don't always keep old ts&cs on the website.
You clearly need to clarify what deal your on.0 -
Check the terms and conditions carefully. I had a debt releif order(DRO) and they claimed that I had not informed them after the first year ended and that it is company policy. That is not in their T&C. They informed me that it was an internal T&C. Also it is there Policy to keep you on credit reports for 6 years. This also is not in there T&C. Does anyone else have a view on these kind of things. It is worth checking this. They could argue that the terms and conditions were updated since you last received them!0
