Redundancy threat whilst pregnant

Hello

I am 9 weeks pregnant and I am waiting for the consultation period for redundancy at work to start, we are expecting the letters in the next week or so. I am not sure that my post will be affected although from what has been said at work all our posts will be deleted and we will have to re-apply for jobs.

As yet I have not mentioned to anyone at work I am pregnant and I am concerned that if I do this will affect me being successful in a role, I'm not sure how long I can hold of telling work though, at the moment I am not showing but obviously won't last forever.

Is there any advantage to telling work I am pregnant? and if i do lose my job and I right in thinking I would not be entitled to any maternity pay from either work or government dispite having working full time since I was 17 (i'm going to be 40 next year)?

It is a bit worrying and stressful to think I may not have a job and this very important time in my life:angry: and now more than ever need to keep a job!

I watched an Employment Tribunal a few months ago where the claimant was alleging she'd been made redundant because she was pregnant.

During the hearing, the company's HR staff testified they knew it was wrong to select her for redundancy when they knew she was pregnant. Unfortunately, I don't know the tribunal's decision but I'm guessing she won her case seeing as the other side admitted they broke the law.

I suggest you Google the rules on pregnancy, discrimination and redundancy.

pregnancy is not in itself a protection from redundancy.

True, but the OP is worried her pregnancy my influence their decision.

I can't post links yet, but the maternity action group has a information leaflet on the issue.

A reputable employer is less likely to make a pregnant person redundant.
  • Here too, the converse applies...
