Extended european car insurance

I will have to spend a year in Germany and need to insure my UK registered car to be able to use it while I am there.

I am currently half way though an annual policy with my UK insurer but the maximum they cover is 90 days of consistent use.

Is there a company which can sell me an add-on to cover foreign use for extended period? If not, which car insurance is foreign use friendly?
I guess getting a new UK insurance would still be cheaper then paying £900 for the local MOT and headlights change over, then paying for German insurance and still pay probably as much to put the headlights back the right way on my return.
