does a 3d bluray film also play as 2d

Ok, bought a 3d tv weeks ago and am just about to buy my first film in 3d (Narnia) however there are several versions available which have me a bit stumped as to which to buy. There is a 3d bluray which also includes the standard bluray. My question is won't the 3d film just play as a 2d anyway if played on a non 3d player/tv? Had a bit of a google but can't really find the facts. Anyone know for sure? It'd be nice to just watch a film in standard 2d now and again rather than donning the glasses every time, but not so nice if I have to keep buying double discs!

No, If its a 3D film you will get a blurred imaged or shadows on a standard TV.

If you want to watch in 3D then you normally have no option than to purchase a disc which plays only in this format. However, new films like "Dredd 3D" and old films like "Dial M for Murder 3D" come on single discs which include both versions.
These are rather the exception, however.

Any 3D movie you buy will play in 2D either by a menu option at the beginning or in some cases another disc which I would guess is to preserve picture quality. You will not get a blurred image on a standard TV it would just play the 2D version if you don't have a 3D capable TV or player or in the case of separate disc the 3D version wouldn't play at all.

After a little more research (I actually found the answers on the Disney site!). A 3d film is either released as a single disc with both versions on it (few films are released this way) or as a stand alone 3d disc which doesn't play as 2d and you have to buy the 2d version seperately or in a box set.

I would say they won't play in 2D in 99% of cases, that's why a 2D version is included. I posted some examples of 3D discs which do also play in 2D above, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

All 3D films on Blu-ray come with a 2D option - on the same disc or on a separate 2D only disc.

Think some 3D TV's can "downgrade" 3D to 2D. My LG can.

They just throw away the image for the right eye and show only the Left eye image on screen.

But it depends on the TV and only for Blu-Rays.

"copied/ripped" 3D movies tend to have left and right images side by side or top/bottom on screen and the TV handles the conversion those are 3D only and can't be turned into a 2D image easily.

It's hardly a 2D "option" if it's on a separate disc. As I said above, most 3D discs won't play on non-3D equipment but if they don't another disc is included.

You'll always pay a Premium for 3D enabled discs, so it matters little whether you pay for a Double disc set or a combined 3D and 2D single disc.

It is an option - open the box, choose a disc! Are you stuck in the virtual world of on-disc menus?!
