More chance with existing bank?

Hi,
I'm about to try for a new 0% credit card but my credit rating is probably not great.
With which bank would I have most chance of getting it?
a) Santander - with whom I hold a current account. (I have overdraft but stay within approved limit) or
b) someone new, e.g, Fluid or Barclaycard?

Many thanks in advance,
Wayne.

  • Hi Wayne,

First of all welcome to MSE :)

If you are after a new 0% or even your first 0% card you are best trying a few soft search tools, these run a credit check but leave a search mark only you can see and not potential lenders.

Barclaycard have a soft search tool available on there site its under "Am I eligible?"

Also see the MSE soft search tool and look under the 0% purchase tab. Link https://creditcards.moneysavingexpert.com/

After this apply for the card you have more chance in getting (You get a % out of 100% of likely hood of acceptance).

If you apply for a card and you get declined, I would say go into a local branch and speak with someone as they can sometimes push things in the right direction if you get me ;)

    Thanks,

    C

There's only one decent soft search tool out there & that's Nationwide which will give you your APR & Credit Limit

Do not use MSE credit tools as they are hopeless and don't even check the correct CRA that your card your applying for will do a credit search on hence pointless.

Pa Don't go into your bank either like the above poster suggests as bank personal has no authority to do anything.
  • Hmm strange when I had been declined online for my Lloyds card, I went in and spoke to the branch manager who happy issued me with one, maybe he put it through a different way? Not sure

He would've had to put you through their credit scoring for the card as a Bank Manager can't just issue you with a credit card.
  • Thank you. I will certainly try the soft searches at Barclays and Nationwide - that's v useful to know.
Do you think that there is any more likelehood with Santander than elsewhere for me, just on the grounds that I'm an existing customer? (Current account for many years.)

It helps but you won't know until you apply.

I appreciate that you're trying to help but it looks very much like you are trying to tout for business - something that your signature says you shouldn't be doing!

I sort of agree but to be fair the pre-eligibility checker will also tell you of other companies credit cards if your not eligible for any of theirs.
