Taps

Does anyone here have an idea of how much it would cost for a plumber to come and replace the taps in both my bath and basin. The hot one doesn't work in the handbasin and the cold one doesn't work in the bath!

In what way don't they work? Changing the taps might be a bit extreme as its most likely fixable unless you subscribe to the principle that when the car runs out of petrol you buy a new car. :D

    Cheers.

    Thanks for replying keystone
Basically neither run any water - they are at least 25 years old and look pretty grim (chrome gone and greeny brass showing through but not in a good way). I do understand about the running out of petrol thing but thought in this case it might be worth replacing due to age and nastiness!!

It was a sort of joke really. 25 year old taps will almost inevitably have a head gear inside like this:

these do seize up but they can be serviced. Equally the washer can perish and blocks up the ways in the tap body. All that can be addressed without the need to replace the actual taps. But if the chrome plating has gone and they are generally looking their age then perhaps an update isn't such a bad idea. You will of course be replacing both hot and cold on each as a pair.

As for costs it shouldn't be longer than half a day - that allows for the possibility that the backnuts might appear to be welded to the tap shank due to age and corrosion. So say something less than £ 100 for labour. Don't know what plumbers cost in your area.

    Cheers

I bet the new ones don't last 25 years though:D.

Op, get an idea of the type of tap you like/want, don't buy at this stage. Then get a quote from a plummer, regardless of what anyone on here says, it's what the guys in your local area charge that matters.
The trade guy may get a better deal or have different views on reliability than you.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

    Thanks keystone and cyclonebri1
I will get a plumber to come and quote - I know it's the sensible thing to do just didn't want a horrible shock that I wouldn't be able to hide if I was quoted an enormous sum (in a total meltdown financially here!)
