    My thoughts exactly.
Although I've never opened either of my children's mail (unless they were away at Uni and had specifically asked me to - and then I still felt bad doing it) I would do anything to protect them from what I see as harmful - after all when they are toddlers we always lock up medicines etc, and I see the unnecessary peddling of credit cards to possibly financially unaware teens/early twenties as potentially just as harmful.
I've seen the harm debt can do to kids of this age (my colleague's daughter racked up £17k debt in just this way) and would do anything I could to stop my kids doing the same thing.

I agree, I got one of these at 18, went to Uni, racked it up, didn't set up a DD, didn't worry about the repayments, kinda put it to the back of my mind and paid occasionally. What an idiot I was. When I was on a period working abroad, I got a call from my Mum saying she wouldn't tell my Dad but there was a debt-recovery agency wanting their cash (more than double my credit limit). Luckily I had just enough from a salary just before I left the UK.

*edit* ^^^ just to add, my parents did a great job of raising me. I was educated about money and all kinds of things like that, I just suppose my reckless and impulsive personality and student life took over.

no suprise to see it's Capital One that's up to these dirty tactics. If we had a proper government they'd ban these sharks

Well, try not to give the OP a hard time, she just wanted to make sure her son will not get in debt..

Although I do agree that value of money should be taught from young age.

I got 3k credit in total from all lenders since i was 18 and I was never in debt or slip a payment.

Pre approved means nothing. Its just a marketing ploy. If your son applied for the card they would still carryout a credit search before giving him a card.
