Calor gas heater - pilot light left on or off.

We have a calor gas heater (a 4kw calor hotspot).

To turn it on you need to open the back, rotate the gas switch on the coupler, shut it, and then press the ignition button to get the pilot, before upping the gas to get the required heat level. Its quite a fiddly process and I dont think it is doing the housing any good being opened and closed 3 or 4 times a day.

Do other people go through this long process all the time or is the norm to leave the pilot light on and not open the back at all.

My online research suggests it would be approx £1 a week (which for the 12 or so weeks we will use it I can live with). It appears to have a safety mechanism for stopping the gas if the light goes out.

Many thanks
