Tell us why you should win

So I see this in a lot of comps normally as a tiebreaker e.g. tell us in no more than 50 words why you should win.
Would anyone who has ever won a competition like this care to share any tips? What actually wins?
Generally I have always avoided any comp with this question but I am curious to see what gets picked as a winner. Is it better to spend a lot of time coming up with something funny or clever.
Competitions that allow comments seem to attract a lot of sycophantic comments and an extraordinary amount of quite transparent begging. Is this the route to go? Surely it is too obvious and generic.
If I had to guess I would say put something clever but slightly sycophantic which displays some kind of product knowledge or knowledge of something related to the competition prize. I'm just guessing though and have nothing to back it up. Please enlighten me if you can.

I hate these sorts of comps, and you are right, some people come up with the sorts of stories that make you want to vomit.........eg 'I want to win it for my mum who has recently been diagnosed with cancer and has 3 months to live', 'I want to win this for my disabled child who is confined to a wheel chair', 'I want to win because I NEVER win anything!
I just write something like: 'I really like the prize and could do with a new...../or 'it would be a real treat to win something I could otherwise not be able to afford' At least it is honest - if the winner is chosen randomly then why lie or write an essay?:TA big thanks to all who post and sprinkling lucky dust to all who enter :smileyhea0 -
LOL - but like the Murpheys, you're not bitter huh Hampster?
John, I'm not sure if I've won due to a comment, but I have sometimes looked to see what comment/caption did win. I have noticed where the winning entry often is one that has promoted the company/product in a clever way. I guess it is somewhat sycophantic, but on the other hand, it's a guessing game, in that you have to guess what type of comment they're looking for.

I am who I'm meant to be

My latest one is along the lines of:
Why do I want to win? Well, I've got no sob story, no hard life, but this prize would make myself and the people I want to share it with very happy. And I like being happy!
So, just honest, and slightly confrontational (hmm, aka, me)0 -
I guess they are trying to get a good piece of copy on the cheap.
I won a comp with a strapline which they then used but never sent me the prize!
So, my advice would be (if you have the time/inclination) to write something punchy that could be used to sell the product to a wider audience.0 -
"I should really win this competition because I smell nice"
or
"I know where you live - mwaaahaaahaaa"
My cunning plan is that they will not really know whether I am joking or whether I am slightly unhinged therefore they will play safe and make me the winner 'just in case'.
I'm teasing, I too avoid tie-breaker competitions they bring me out in a cold sweat! Although....I have started trying my hand at caption competitions. Which (in my opinion) feel slightly different.

My mum really IS disabled and in a wheelchair and I really DO have cancer (getting treatment so should still be around for a while!) so when a comp asks why I'd like a prize I often say because of those reasons.
Does that make me one of the bad guys
I'm not doing it for sympathy, it's just how my life really is!0 -

Oh Purple xx Sending you the VERY best of wealth, health & happiness xx
I'm an extraordinarily selfish person SO DO stay around for a VERY long time as I'm new here and would really like to get to know lots of people.
You asked.. "Does that make me one of the bad guys?" Does it *%$* as like. You are being open & honest and that has surely got to bring rewards!

PS. Sorry for the kissfest (xx)! Obviously I'm having a loose day"The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
