Damp help

Hi everyone

Currently trying to tidy house up to put on the market. I have damp in my fireplace and I usually re-plaster and paint when the damp shows through (usually cracks plaster). This time I painted the same colour as before but the plaster was showing and so I have bought a darker paint to go over it all...however there is now a damp patch covering an area higher than the plaster, which was never there before. I also have ?salt deposits coming out at the bottom which is a new thing. My uncle who did the plastering said he would do basic damp proofing with ?chemical injection and I am worried this has made the problem worse.

If I paint over this with the darker colour as planned, is it just going to be a waste of time? Will damp proof paint/seal work?

I have got a builder coming for a look at my chimney soon but may have to save up for any actual work or just get a quote and give it to prospective buyers.

I have taken two pictures but don't understand how I can upload on here direct from desktop. It needs a web address??

Any advice welcome.

I had this problem with my fireplace that i bricked up.

Firstly you need to make the chimney top waterproof to stop any aditional moisture getting in.
If yours is bricked up like mine, make sure theres a vent to allow air circulation up the chimney to dry it out.
I found out mine had a histroic hole further up that had just been mordered in, so i dug it all back out and used a waterproof morther to fix it, not had a problem since.
  • Thanks SK240. I suspect it may be an issue with the chimney hence getting the builder in. Just fed up of waiting for him to come and hate chasing people up more than twice (family friend)
