I also have a great plumber. He was at my house for about three hours a few weeks ago to fit a new kitchen tap and do other bits and bobs – he charged me £75 including the new pipes he had to go out to the local DIY store to buy as the ones he had weren't bendy or something!
I was amazed!I'm married now! Yippee!0 -
75 for 3 hours work, thats actually expensive, was he private or a company plumber? company as we al know charge around 50 an hour, but a private plumber you should haggle.0

Going back to Gloria's point, I have my heating and hot water on for 2.5 hours in the morning and about 5 in the late afternoon and evening. My thermostat won't allow two different cycles so I'm forced to have both on for the same length of time over the winter. The central heating thermostat is set to 21deg. In the summer, when the heating is off (hopefully soon) I'll set the hot water to c 2 hours morning and night. One thing possibly worth doing is to look at the temperature of the thermostat on your hot water tank - if the water ever comes out too hot to use, it's worth turning this down, as you're only paying to heat up the water unnecessarily. Once the water is hot I imagine it takes very little power to keep it at temperature, so the length of time the hot water is on probably makes little difference to your bills.0

I had my hot water and heating on constant last winter, but this year I have timed the water to come on half hour in morning and half hour in the night and the heating to come on an hour in the morning and 4 hours in the night. My bills this year were about half of last years, so it pays really to only have the heating/water on when you need them.
Also, make sure your hot water tank is well lagged with one of those jacket things.Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
i had my setting set for on 630am off 7am on 11pm off 11pm and i had the water set on twice so it only realy came on for 1/2 hour in morning and flicked on off in evening(still a hot bath full at 10pm at night washing machine on cold water only) the heating was set to once so it come on at 630 am and go off at 11pm but i used the thermostat to control it(as the setting is in the kids bedroom and thermostat in downstairs hallway)i have an intermittant connection so sorry if i dont reply straight away

Hardwater
Ive forgotten the name of it but you put an anti corrosive into the central heating filling loop, its avialable from most diy stores like focus, b&q wickes,
your boiler if correctly installed should have a bung near the boiler which you unscrew drain down the system then add the mix, its black in colour, *yuk*! then top up with water

I doubt you'll get an answer to that one - this thread had been dormant since 2004 and if you look at nh's profile they were last on in 2005. Nice revival of an ancient thread though75 for 3 hours work, thats actually expensive, was he private or a company plumber? company as we al know charge around 50 an hour, but a private plumber you should haggle.0
