Thanks guys that has put my mind at rest a little, so if we catch a train to kings cross can we get the tube from there to where ever we are staying?

KX is a 10-min tube from central London, so my recommendation would be to book in a hotel near KX, so that you're not schlepping your luggage across town on arrival and departure days. KX and Euston are a 2-minute walk from each other, and the combination of tube lines from these two stations will get you accessibility to some half dozen tube lines connecting with all parts of the city.

Since it's a special trip, why not consider the Pullman (formerly Novotel) on Euston Road, between KX and Euston stations?

Look at the TFL standard tube map on the TFL website, compare this with a standard google map that shows the physical locations of the tube stations, and compare these with what you want to do. Print a map out, or buy a map of London, and put coloured pins in where the attractions are that you want to see, and their nearest tubes as mentioned above.

In regards to seeing a show, usually I have often found that the best value seats are available on the day at the theatre box office. Some shows such as Wicked , War Horse, Once, We will Rock you reserve specific seats and only sell them on the day when the box office opens. Les Mis do not do day seats. Check it out on the website of the show you want to see and just make sure to arrive before the box office opens to get the best available day seats. Once is quite a romantic musical and half hour or so before the performance starts they have the cast on the stage doing a gig (you could ask theatre staff to ask for them to a request for your hubby) and there is a bar on the pub stage set which you can buy drinks from. If you like Mumford and sons then you will probably like the songs in the show.
